Herniated Disc Treatment from our Toledo Chiropractor
One of the most common injuries we treat at Frame Chiropractic and Acupuncture is a herniated disc. This is closely related to a slipped disc or bulging disc, and these conditions share many similarities in terms of causes, symptoms and treatment. Our Toledo chiropractor is skilled at evaluating your spine and determining an accurate diagnosis that we can use to develop a treatment plan tailored to the specifics of your condition.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
The space between each of your vertebrae is filled by an intervertebral disc, and these provide cushioning as well as flexibility, allowing for the impressive range of motion of your spine. These discs are made up of an outer fibrous layer, the annulus fibrosus, and a softer inner core, the nucleus pulposus.
If a disc becomes damaged, it’s possible for the outer layer to rip, allowing some of the softer inner layer to leak out. This also causes the disc to lose its proper shape, and so the vertebrae will not be supported in the right position. A diagnosis of a slipped disc or a bulging disc involves a similar loss of position, but the outer layer in both of these scenarios generally stays intact.
Causes and Symptoms of Herniated Discs
Herniated discs can result from the pressures of aging, as wear and tear accumulate on the soft tissues and weaken them to the point where they lose their integrity. An acute traumatic event can also cause a herniated disc, and this may be anything from a car accident to a work-related injury.
The most common symptoms of a herniated disc are pain radiating out from the point of injury, often traveling down an arm or a leg. You may experience tingling or weakness as well, and all of these symptoms are caused by the irritation or compression of a nerve root emerging from the spinal column near the damaged disc.
Professional Chiropractic Treatment for a Herniated Disc
When you visit our Toledo office for herniated disc treatment, we’ll complete a physical evaluation to test your reflexes, strength, and range of motion. We’ll also go over the progression of your symptoms with you to get a full picture of your condition, and we’ll then develop a treatment plan to target the root cause of your pain.
This treatment may involve some combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, spinal decompression, ultrasound, acupuncture, and more. We will also teach you some exercises to do on your own that can build on the progress we make during your in-office sessions.
